Custom Feeds

Custom Feeds are a powerful feature allowing network operators to filter the content available on the network and showcase it in different ways on the Network Site, or embed it on another website.

Possible use cases#

  1. Create a page which shows all the events on that network
  2. Create a page showcasing all the interactable content - eg polls, surveys, quizzes
  3. Showcase high quality writing - only long form content, ie articles
  4. Feature posts belonging to a particular channel
  5. Feature posts by a particular author
  6. Feature posts tagged with a certain hashtag

And so on. The filters are cascaded, so one could create a custom feed that contains only articles from a particular channel, tagged with a certain hashtag, etc.

Creating Custom Feeds#

Custom Feeds can be created in 2 ways:

  1. Page Builder for Featured Pages
  2. Custom Feed creator from the Hero Dashboard

Page Builder for Featured Pages

Click on Custom Feed item on the Page Builder "add block" menu to insert a new Custom Feeds block on the page.

Add a custom feed block to the Featured Page

Custom Feed creator from the Hero Dashboard

Click on the Custom Feed item under Hero Dashboard > Network Dashboard to launch the creator.

Feed parameters#

Select various filter parameters. Filters can be bypassed, or can be cascaded.

Examples:

  1. The default setting shows ALL the posts across ALL the channels.
  2. By leaving the Channel ID and the Member ID field blank, and adding a Hashtag, one could create a custom feed that shows all the posts, across all the channels tagged with a certain hashtag.

Click on Generate Custom Feed when done with the settings. The newly created feed can be previewed below the fold.

In some cases, certain parameter settings will result in no posts being found!

Each card has 2 controllable aspects

  1. Slim card - setting this will remove the author box from the post card
  2. Card actions - setting this show a strip with various card actions

These two settings are particularly useful when creating feeds that can be embedded, and allow seamless feed cards to be created.

Displaying Custom Feeds#

Custom Feeds can be viewed in 3 ways:

  1. A Custom Feed created using the Page Builder is available on that Featured Page
  2. A Custom Feed created using the Custom Feed creator from the Hero Dashboard
  3. is automatically available on a standalone feed pages (ie a system destination)
  4. can be embedded on another website

Custom Feed destination

A unique link for the newly created custom feed is shown. This link can be copied, and then can inserted into the menu, or linked from posts and pages.

Creating an embed from the Custom Feed

Conversely, the Custom Feed can be embedded into a non-MainCross based website using the code that is provided.
