Channel settings

An individual channel's settings can be configured via the Channel settings item on the Configure channel Dashboard. One can change the access level, allowed posts, widgets, channel champions and heroes. One can also delete the channel on this page.

3 sets of settings are available, arranged as tabs:

  1. Misc
  2. Heroes
  3. Champions

Misc tab

Channel control#

Access control

The current access control rules for Topic channels can be changed here.

It is strongly recommended not to change the access control rules unless really needed.

However, access control of Private can only be selected initially when creating the channel - it cannot be changed later.

Read the extended help article on Channel access control.

Moderated channel

When a channel has been set as "moderated" by the network team, all posts made by members to the channel are not visible to anyone else except the network team.

This feature is in early access at this time and is not expected to be used in production.

Channel post control#

Read the product story first:

MainCross Social+

Allow members to post only certain kind of posts | MainCross Social+

Post control is a very powerful feature that gives complete control to the network operator - all the way from a locked down network to a permissive...

Each channel can be individually configured to allow only certain kinds of posts to network members.

Note that the global settings override the individual channel settings, if turned off.

Note that Network Heroes always have access to the full suite of posting tools in the channel irrespective of the configuration here.

The following configurations are permitted:

1. Allow all post types

Allow a member to post using any post type within the channel.

  • This is the default and we recommend leaving at this level for a great user experience
  • It provides a uniform experience across the network and there are no surprises

2. Allow no post types

Completely prevent a member from posting.

  • We do not recommend this - especially if its restricted across all the channels of the network
  • This facility should be used sparingly since it may lead to confusion over which channel allows (or disallows) posting
  • It may be used for some channel(s) where only the Heroes want to post

3. Allow some post types

Allow access to some post types only per channel.

  • We do not recommend this - especially if different channels allow different kinds of post types without a pattern
  • This facility should be used sparingly since it may lead to confusion over which channel allows which kind of posts

Tip

Note that #2 and #3 does not prevent the member from performing the following actions:

  1. Upvote, downvote
  2. Participating in Polls, Surveys, Quizzes etc
  3. Commenting and replies
  4. Posting and Answers to a Question
  5. Posting a Response to an Open Poll

Post types

Each post type can be individually enabled or disabled.

Select the post types to enable

(In page) Channel navigation config#

This feature is available for Org and Persona channels only

The Channel navigation config setting allows:

  1. Reordering and customization of the tabs linked to standard subpages shown on the channel navigation strip
  2. Custom subpages. Please contact support if you would like this feature enabled for your Network site.

The tabs on the channel navigation strip are dynamically generated per channel following a set of rules, in order:

  1. Home and Updates tabs show on all pages
  2. Chat tab is shown for channels which have a group chat enabled
  3. Shop tab is shown for channels which have a Shopfront enabled
  4. Contact tab shows on all pages
  5. About tab is shown for channels which have the optional about page filled out
  6. Search tab is shown for non-private channels

Note that once the channel navigation strip is manually configured, it will no longer be created dynamically following the rules.

Please take care to enable only those tabs that are actually available / enabled on the channel, eg don't configure the chat tab if there is no group chat enabled, don't configure the shop tab if there is no Shopfront, etc.

Menu structure

Provide the config as a simple JSON array. Take care to provide valid JSON.

Each json item in the array corresponds to a tab on the channel navigation strip. Only the following edits can be performed:

  • Items may be removed and/or reordered to control which tabs show up.
  • The text value is displayed on the tab and can be changed. It is mandatory to keep the text field as a single word.
[
 {"text": "Home" , "slug": "" , "icon": "Home" },
{"text": "Updates", "slug": "updates" , "icon": "Feed" },
 {"text": "Chat" , "slug": "chat" , "icon": "Chat" },
{"text": "Shop" , "slug": "shopfront", "icon": "Shop" },
 {"text": "Contact", "slug": "contact" , "icon": "Contact"},
 {"text": "About" , "slug": "about" , "icon": "About" },
 {"text": "Search" , "slug": "search"  , "icon": "Search" }
]

Shopfront#

The Shopfront setting, if available, allows a Shopfront (ie ecommerce store) to be enabled on the channel.

This setting is enabled for Org and Persona channels if a Market Provider has been enabled under Hero dashboard > Network dashboard > Essentials config.

Engagement widgets#

Some engagement widgets can be enabled, depending on the channel type.

External settings#

The External settings input, if available, allows extended settings to be provided for the channel.

Please contact support if you would like this feature enabled for your Network site.

Delete channel#

A channel can be deleted via the dashboard only if it has not been syndicated, and does not have any posts, or subscribers, ie it is empty.

If you need to delete a channel and are unable to do so from the dashboard, please contact support.

If you make a mistake and would like to recover the channel, please contact support.

Champions tab

Channel Champions (CC)#

Any Network or Channel Hero can promote any existing member into a Channel Champion (CC). Once added, Heroes can also remove any CC.

  • This is primarily meant to be used to reward distinguished / noteworthy creators and contributors who are connected to a specific channel.
  • It can also be used to allow only some selected members to post in a channel.

The CC table shows the currently configured CCs for this channel. Number of CC are limited by the tier plan.

Accounts which are already Heroes cannot be set as CC, ie NCO, NCA, NCM and CO, CA, CM cannot be set as a CC since they are already at a higher level.

Channel Champions have the following privileges:

  1. They are shown prominently on the channel page on the Channel Champions card.
  2. Their content shows up under the "curated" filter of the channel feed.
  3. Their content is given higher prominence in search engines.
  4. They are allowed to post into a channel when posting for members is turned off.

CC privileges don't apply retrospectively, ie content created by the member before being promoted to a CC will not fall under #2 and #3 above.

Heroes tab

Channel Heroes#

The Channel Heroes table shows the currently configured hero accounts for this channel.

The Network Owner (NCO) or Network Admins (NCA) can promote any existing account into a Channel Owner (CO). Once added, the NCO or NCA account can also remove any Channel Owner.

  1. Please take care to give channel owner rights to a correct & trusted member.
  2. It is highly recommended to remove any CO accounts that are not needed.

Channel Heroes have all privileges of Channel Champions.

Network Heroes automatically gets permission for all the network's channels - all Network Heroes are automatically Channel Heroes, ie their permissions trickle downwards.

Errors when adding Channel hero

Oops, cannot make this member into a Channel Hero 🦸 - most probable reason is that the username does not exist.

This member is already a Network Hero on this network - Network Heroes automatically gets permission for all the network's channels, they need not be added as a Channel Hero.

This member is already a Channel Hero or a Channel Champion on this channel. - If a member is assigned as a Channel Champion, then they cannot be assigned as a Channel hero.

Oops, cannot make this member into a Channel Hero 🦸. Member does not have access to this access controlled channel. - This is an access controlled channel and member need to get access to the channel first. Without that, the member can't be promoted as a Channel hero for that channel.

Tip: A Magic Link for the channel may be used by the member to get access to the channel.

Only 1 Channel Owner allowed - A Channel Owner already exists.

Max 3 Channel Admin allowed - 3 Channel Admins have already been assigned.
