Network Roles

Network Sites may optionally define a few roles for its Members. The role schema can be made mandatory - ie existing and new members have to choose a role before participating on the Network.

We have an exciting new feature #NetworkRoles being rolled out to networks which opt for it.

Whenever anyone first lands on a Network Site A, they are mandated to select a "Network Role" as defined by the network operator of Site A. This is 1 time only, and a Badge is automatically assigned to them. The Roles are defined by each Network, say “Startup”, or “Advisor” or “Investor” or whatever.

This step is mandatory in both cases:

  1. New account - Member creates a new account on Network Site A
  2. Cross-network login - Member logs in via account created on Network Site B

Powerful feature

Since Network Roles are defined per Network, the same account can have different roles on different networks! Think of these as "personas" for the same (hooman) account, which is how it happens in real life - one may be a "Expert" at a work network and a "Culinary Artist" at a hobby network. C'est la vie.

How does it help?

The Network Roles feature is a great way to solve multiple potential network requirements:

  1. Allow members to self select a role when entering the role, without the Network operator needing to be involved
  2. Add a barrier-to-entry for purposeful Networks that wants to only admin members that fit the defined roles
  3. Meet regulatory requirements where explicit consent is needed from a Member before participating
  4. Collect extra data from the Member as required for that role
The Network Roles feature is not meant to be used ordinarily, since it adds friction to the onboarding experience, unless you have specialized requirements as above.

Here's how it works

1. The role selection is integrated into the onboarding flow

2. Multiple roles as defined are presented to the Member. There is no way to bypass this screen. If its a cross-network login, then this is the only screen presented to the Member,

3. Once a role is selected, a form is presented that must be filled out by the Member.

4. The Role selection and the form can be viewed, and the form can be edited anytime. However role once selected cannot be changed.
